Thanks for sharing your work! I’m curious about the recruitment strategies your project used to develop such a large and geographically distributed network of teachers. Also, what kinds of resources or supports are provided at the teacher level?

Our group in Baton Rouge, LA, the STEMup Baton Rouge has used the Engineering is Elementary curriculum with one of our middle school’s eighth grade science classes. We focused on the process technology of “Food for Thought”. Our weeks with the students were a great success for them and us and fun all the time.

This program is essential for the urban classroom. The children respond well to hands on activities and learn Engineering in the process. Kudos the EIE creators!!!

EiE looks great! I wonder what impact introducing engineering concepts to students at this younger age will have on increasing STEM recruits in the future! You talked a bit about it in a previous response, but what type of PD is provided for teachers in the program?

PD is so important, isn’t it? Elementary educators often don’t have much college coursework in STEM subjects; we see a big boost, not just in subject matter knowledge, but also confidence when teachers complete our workshops. You can browse descriptions of our workshops here (http://www.eie.org/engineering-elementary/works...), but briefly we have a workshop that introduces teachers to the curriculum, a workshop for teachers who have previous experience with EiE but want to improve their practice, and a workshop for teacher educators. We hold workshops here in Boston, or EiE PD providers will travel on request. We’ve also developed a national network of highly qualified PD providers, so we can also refer schools and districts to someone in their area.

Very good video! The teacher was encouraging and informative in letting the students know that engineering is a field full of opportunities for them! And I loved the expression of the students when told they can be engineers and get paid for it!

Our MSP, STEM Literacy Community of Practice integrated the EIE materials as a bridge for teachers to STEM and also towards building both classroom tools by grade as well as ELA reading extensions. These extensions helped continue the project as a Community of Practice. We are just focusing on the Optics/Light set this summer. Wonderful PD, thank you.
